It doesn’t happen often, but when I get motivated to clean and organize, watch out! Last weekend I was inspired to clean out the linen closet.
You might think only linens belong in this closet, as the name would suggest. Nope. While it may have started that way, over time other things were added, shifted, or used. It had become the closet where all random things are put.
This is not unlike what we experience in human resources, from establishing one set of programs/practices to adding, changing, or modifying bits and pieces over time. There’s always a new initiative or goal to incorporate, and before you know it, your HR closet is no longer neat or tidy.
Get Cleaning
The only way to truly get organized is to roll up your sleeves and dig in. I sorted, sifted, and rearranged the items. I found some things were outdated, some redundant, some that need to be cleaned or updated, and some ready for the recycle bin.
Through this process I created more of a mess than I had when I started. Spoiler alert: That’s okay!
Going through one thing at a time, removing the chaos and bringing alignment along the way, helped me create a better outcome.
And that outcome is not only a clean linen closet, but also an organized and comprehensive HR closet of policies and practices born from effective human resource planning.
